The 2011 Variety World Conference is currently taking place this week in Chicago, Illinois. Chairman of Miss World Julia Morley is the International President of Variety, The Children's Charity, and throughout the week of fundraising, awards ceremonies and presentations, Miss World Alexandria Mills, Miss World Africa Emma Wareus, and Mr World Kamal Ibrahim have been learning more about Variety and helping out at the events.
The Conference reaches its finale on Sunday night with the Humanitarian Awards taking place in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Palmer House Hilton Hotel. The Chicago Cubs will receive the Humanitarian Award for their local and international charitable work, and Miss World was invited to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch with two kids who had benefitted from the Cubs and Variety's donations. Unfortunately, the game was postponed due to rain, but a visit to Wrigley Field Stadium still proved to be a memorable experience. Miss World and Miss World Africa were later interviewed on WGN Radio's 'Sports Night' show at their studio in the famous Tribune Tower building, and spoke about their experiences over the past six months and the work of Variety.
On Friday night, the convention played host to the Heart Awards, where the Variety Tents around the world were honoured for the past year's work, with Tent 36 - Great Britain receiving the Gold Heart Award. But today was all about the children, as the Variety members boarded a boat on Lake Michigan's Navy Pier for the "We Serve The Kids" Lunch. Children from various groups, schools and organisations in Chicago which had received support from Variety were treated to a special lunch onboard, with fairground games, circus skills, arts and crafts, face-painting, and music to keep them entertained - and Alexandria, Emma and Kamal all joined in with the fun.
